Jekyll and Hyde, Lion and Unicorn Theatre

A tense, taut adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic tale of duality and mystery at Kentish Town's fringe theatre.

All the gothic energy of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is projected onto the stage in this innovative adaptation. The elements of violence and the unknown take the forefront, in a twist on the classic that draws out the overlap between madness and genius.
The split between the earnest doctor and his evil alter ego is embodied simply but effectively by casting two actors and playing upon the idea of reflections with a gilt frame evoking a mirror. Simon James Collier's stark stage design reinforces the atmospheric potential of small fringe spaces: sitting in the round, the audience are surrounded by the scrawled formulae on the floor and walls. And the slickly-paced production shifts between blood-cooling tension and comic interlude.
The talented young cast have infectious energy and, in the case of Wyatt Wendel's Mr Hyde, truly chilly stage presence. If you're not too jumpy, and fancy a refreshing take on a Gothic classic, Jekyll and Hyde is well worth seeing -- and don't be surprised if you laugh just as often as you cover your eyes with fear.
