Lost Boy, Finborough Theatre

The familiar children’s tale of Peter Pan is given a dark and moving twist in Phil Willmott’s new musical, which inventively confronts the pain of growing up and the horror of the First World War.

To mark the beginning of a year commemorating the centenary of the Great War, the founding director of the London-based theatre production company The Steam Industry, which incorporates the Finborough Theatre, brings us Lost Boy. In stark contrast to JM Barrie’s tale of fantasy and escapism, this sequel centres on how the characters and readers of Peter Pan come to terms with the outbreak of war. 

As a soldier prepares for battle with a much-loved copy of Peter Pan in his pocket, sleep and fear begin to blur the line between reality and fiction, suddenly throwing Wendy, John, Michael and Tinker Bell into the midst of war. The songs pay tribute to the Music Hall style of the age, combined with contemporary influences.

JM Barrie’s original story and its characters were inspired by the Llewelyn Davies brothers, three of whom fought in the war and one of whom was killed in action. This poignant parallel to the centenary adds weight to Wilmott’s musical, which is just the latest in a long line of theatrical variations on the Peter Pan story. This production also represents a homecoming of sorts for Wilmott, who was artistic director of the Finborough between 1994 and 1999.

The professional premiere of Lost Boy follows a strong musical theatre tradition at the Finborough, which has revived a number of forgotten masterpieces over the years and played an increasingly central role on the new musical writing scene. Wilmott himself is a key figure in that world, with past achievements including his award-winning show Once Upon a Time at the Adelphi. We’re eager to see if he can replicate that success back on his old stomping ground.
