Jeeves and Wooster in Perfect Nonsense, Duke of York's Theatre

What Ho! Almost a hundred years since they first appeared in print, PG Wodehouse’s beloved comic creations, Jeeves and Wooster, have finally hit the West End. After a recasting, Robert Webb stars as the incompetent but charming aristocrat Bertie Wooster alongside Mark Heap as his long-serving valet, Jeeves.

Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie’s benchmark-setting performance of the early 1990s is a hard act to follow, but this production by Olivier-winning director Sean Foley has proved itself by winning Best Comedy Award at this year's Oliviers. Brothers Robert and David Goodale have adapted Woodhouse’s popular novel, The Code of the Woosters . The result: four stars from critics across the board and an extended run at Duke of York's Theatre until September. A National Tour begins 24th September at The Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, Guilford.

The plot centres on an ill-fated trip to the country in which Wooster finds himself matchmaking his host’s rather wet daughter Madeine Bassett with his acquaintance Gussie Fink-Nottle. There are just three actors in the cast, the third being Mark Hadfield, who has been turning his brilliant comic hand to a number of characters since the opening night last October. Newly cast Webb is known for his starring role in cult Channel Four comedy Peep Show and BAFTA-winning sketch show That Mitchell and Webb Look, whilst Mark Heap is a familiar face in comedy, having appeared in Green Wing, Spaced and Friday Night Dinner.

These heavyweights of humour are already showing themselves to be just as impressive as Matthew Macfadyen and Stephen Mangan before them. The extended run reflects the well-deserved popularity of this riotous production. And if you've already fallen in love with the show, the new casting is a great excuse to return for second helpings.
