Bull, Young Vic
Revived this winter at the Young Vic: Bull, Mike Bartlett's award-winning dark comedy, which compresses office politics and brutal sport.
Two jobs, three candidates and a boxing ring – office politics is front and centre as Mike Bartlett’s Bull returns to the Young Vic after sellout success earlier in 2015.
The show has already enjoyed a hugely successful run at the Sheffield Crucible, a stint on the New York stage as part of the ‘Brits off Broadway festival ’, a National Theatre Award for Best New Play and the 2015 Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Affiliate Theatre. And, with another Mike Bartlett premiere impressing at the Almeida, plus the sustained success of Charles III , Bull reinforces the starry credentials of its playwright.
Whilst the plot holds few surprises (we defy anyone not to know who is about to be handed their P45 within the opening ten minutes), it is this inevitability that proves the play’s most brilliant and disturbing feature.
At just 55 minutes, there is little breathing room in this darkly crafted production, and by setting a battle of corporate wits in the most brutal of sporting arenas, director Clare Lizzimore forces the audience to question their own loyalties, daring them to side with the victors in whose realm the action takes place.
Public booking opens at 10am on Wednesday 5 August
