Confirmation, Battersea Arts Centre
A challenging and provocative collaboration between director Rachel Chavkin and performer-playwright Chris Thorpe, Confirmation comes back to B.A.C.
This provocative monologue has already charmed the critics, first at the Edinburgh Fringe, then in a 2014 London transfer. Now Confirmation returns to Battersea Arts Centre for a two week run this spring. Described as an "attempt to have an honourable dialogue with political extremism", it may sound more like a Guardian Feature than theatrical performance, but Thorpe's unflinching writing makes for an engaging show, which stays with you long after the final curtain.
Chris Thorpe: Playwright, performer, innovator
Chris Thorpe established himself as a bold new voice in theatre withThere has Possibly Been an Incident, which juxtaposes monologues dealing with different forms of terrorism, including the Anders Breivik case. This 2013 hit was selected to represent Britain at Berlin's Theatertreffen festival, and prompted an essay of effusive praise from theatre bigwig, Punk Rock playwright Simon Stephens: "Chris Thorpe makes me want to try harder. He makes me want to be bolder with my form and braver with my content. He makes me want to be a better writer."
Rachel Chavkin: director
Rachel Chavkin, artistic director of cult New York ensemble The Team, brings a light touch and theatrical vibrancy to the subject matter. Her Mission Drift at the National Theatre's Shed in 2013 was a roller coaster ride through the experience of the first settlers, exploring the American Dream through song, dance, history and hilarity.
