Far Away, The Young Vic
Imagine a world where everything is at war. This is dramatic backdrop of Caryl Churchill’s Far Away, which comes to the Young Vic’s studio space this November.
Up and coming director Kate Hewitt is staging Far Away as her prize for winning this year’s James Menzies-Kitchin Young Director’s award. Founded to give young directors the financial assistance to originate their own work, the JMK is one of the most prestigious awards available for young practitioners.
The Clare is the perfect space for Far Away. This intimate venue (it seats 80 at most) creates a very real sense of the claustrophobia and voyeurism so prevalent within the text. We are particularly interested to see how Hewitt stages the procession of convicts, perhaps the most difficult scene in the piece. This is a challenging and absorbing play, which offers great scope for innovative and creative direction.
