The Story...

Tensions are running high in a prestigious all-girls' boarding school: the results of Oxbridge applications are about to be revealed. Hopes are pinned on smart and supposedly self-assured Hebe, but this troubled eighteen-year-old is sitting on a stash of a painkillers, diet pills and porn. And her abuse of herself and others makes Hebe a far cry form the ideal student. This painfully honest and sharply funny play explores the combination of pressures from both the big wide world and the claustrophobic boarding school bubble.

Playwright Milly Thomas has been causing quite a stir, with Rabenmutter, her first full length play, shortlisted for Masterclass: Pitch Your Play at The Theatre Royal. A First World Problem draws on her own experience to present an accurate and engaging portrayal of the cusp of adulthood. In a bold move, that proves to be highly effective, Thomas also plays the lead role. 

Director Holly Race Roughan is becoming known for bold, creative choices. Since graduating from Birkbeck she has gained experience and acclaim at the Royal Exchange Manchester and the Edinburgh Fringe. She has just been signed by the RSC, so expect big things from this talented young director.
