After three years of work, Alice Birch’s heartbreaking Little Light finally makes it to the Orange Tree. It's a strange and poetic new play about the nature of nostalgia.

Teddy, Alison and Clarissa are staying in a house by the sea, an annual ritual they perform in order to meet and share stories of the last year. Novelesque in its delivery, the things that go unsaid are just as clear as the dialogue. The characters must learn to let go of one another and their past.
The Background...
The play began life with the Paines Plough company, then eventually graduated to Shoreditch Town Hall and to the Royal Court but finally, in the spring of 2015, Little Light will come to life as a full production. Whilst working with Rashdash Theatre company, a fellow playwright Abbi Greenland described Little Light even in its early stages as “one of the best plays I’ve ever read...it reads like a novel in that ‘page-turner’ way, even though it is so theatrical in its language and its images. And it’s huge and enormous and important and moving.”
Alice Birch’s first full-length play Many Moons was a finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize and won the George Devine Award for Most Promising Playwright for her play at the Royal Court, Revolt. She Said. Revolt Again.
Little Light is directed by David Mercatali, who has been with the project since its first rehearsed reading. He has just been enjoying huge success at the Southwark Playhouse after directing Our Ajax by Timberlake Wertenbaker, Philip Ridley’s Dark Vanilla Jungle and most recently the one man show Johnny Got His Gun.

We predicted that Alice Birch would be an exciting playwright to look out for in the coming years. The National’s decision to present the world premier of her new play at the Temporary Theatre confirms this. Details about ‘We Want You to Watch’ are sketchy, but we know that it covers the thorny topic of pornography. It is produced in collaboration with RashDash Theatre Company and will premier on 11 June 2015.
