A brand new comedy examining the modern day trials of relationships, The new writing and delicate subject matter have divided critics and inspired very mixed reviews.

The Glass Supper, Hampstead Theatre

Martyn Hesford's brand new comedy examines the modern day trials of relationships. With a cast of four men and one woman and a story described as “blistering” and “poetic”, The Glass Supper is a great showcase for new writing and delicate subject matter.

Two urbanites, Marcus and Colin, make the big move to the countryside and are ready to settle down to a peaceful supper that night. But their new kingdom is invaded by a visiting couple and their friend Wendy.

Cast & Creatives...

Michelle Collins, known for land standing roles in both Coronation Street and Eastenders, stars as Wendy. Collins is a brilliant risk-taker when it comes to theatre, from the tiny venue of Theatre 503 to the Take That musical, Never Forget to even The Vagina Monologues. When playing the Nurse in the Bolton Octagon’s Romeo and Juliet in 2011, reviewers were charmed by her “assured and dignified performance.” Discussing her upcoming role in The Glass Supper, Collins said, “It’s a dark comedy, quite an outrageous role for me.”

Joining her is TV star, Michael Begley, who most recently appeared in Marianne Elliot’s Sweet Bird of Youth at the Old Vic Theatre. He appeared in all three series of the smash hit comic drama, William and Mary . This is the second time he has worked with director Abbey Wright and writer Martyn Hesford , the first being Mrs Lowry and Son at the Trafalgar Studios last year. Begley’s performance was praised by Time Out as “ gorgeous ”, named Critic’s Choice by the Telegraph and Hesford's writing was  hailed as “ expertly accomplished .” We can see why this team have reunited at the Hampstead.

Martyn Hesford is a BAFTA nominated writer, who has worked with iconic including Michael Sheen, Julie Walters, Robert Lindsay and Derek Jacobi. A celebrated playwright, his screenwriting credits are equally impressive; his adaptations of Dickens’s Old Curiosity Shop and Nicholas Nickelby were critics’ favourites. He is already workshopping another play with Abbey Wright at the Hampstead called Somewhere Close Always.

Rehearsals began just this week and the crew attending the first day’s read through described laughing uproariously and feeling utterly chilled by the script. We’re convinced that The Glass Supper’s talented team will be taking Hampstead by storm.
