Cultures collide at the Royal Court this June as Khandan (the Pubjab word for 'family') arrives after a successful run at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre. Struggling with his role as head of the household following the death of his father, Pal’s ambitions stand at odds with his mother’s roots and traditions. Khandan is the work of up-and-coming playwright Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti, the 2005 recipient of the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize for female playwrights.
Director Roxana Silbert, Artistic Director of the Birmingham Rep, is no stranger to the Royal Court (she is the former Associate Director). Her production of Dennis Kelly’s Orphans played to rave reviews at the Edinburgh Fringe and at The Soho Theatre, proving her to be a director unafraid of close family drama and the intense relationships involved.
The experienced cast includes Preeya Kalidas (most recognisable from her roles in Bend it Like Beckham and Eastenders) and actor/playwright Sudha Bhuchar who will be coming fresh from a role in My Name Is.. at the Arcola. The intimacy of the Jerwood Theatre Upstairs at the Royal Court means that space is limited and tickets are selling fast.
