Equus, Theatre Royal Stratford East

From its beginnings on the page in 1973 to the 1977 award-winning film, the story of Sir Peter Shaffer's Equus continues to fascinate audiences worldwide. Inspired by a crime in a small town near Suffolk, the tale focuses on a 17-year-old, Alan Strang, who blinds six horses – and the the psychiatrist, Dr Martin Dyasart, who explores what could have possibly happened.

The play comes to the Theatre Royal Stratford East as part of a major new revival, directed by highly acclaimed director Ned Bennett. The production is supported by the English Touring Theatre, one of the UK's leading touring companies, which celebrated its 25th anniversary last year with A Streetcar Named Desire.

Equus is said to explore 'the complex relationships between devotions myth and sexuality', as the relationship between Strang and Dyasart takes the pair deeper into the pathology of the young man.

Shaffer's writing has earned widespread acclaim, as the film adaptation of his play Amadeus won the Academy Award for Best Picture. With UKKT Best Director winner Bennett at the helm of the new production, expectations are high for a bold reimagination, in keeping with the ambitions of Stratford East's artistic director Nadia Fall, who is offering audiences 'a bold programme of reimagined classics, timely revivals and groundbreaking new work'.

The play is coming to Stratford East for a limited number of nights, before moving to the Cambridge Arts Theatre, Theatre Royal Bath, Bristol Old Vic, the Lowry, the Northen Stage and the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre. Book now to avoid disappointment.
