Dust off your pom-poms: Hamilton's Lin Manuel-Miranda has turned cheerleading movie Bring It On into a musical

Bring It On the musical, London 2018
They're sexy, they're cute, they're popular to boot.

They are cheerleaders, and they are coming to London for a peppy new musical. Bring It On, the bastion of any decent noughties sleepover and the movie that ignited an obsession with pompoms and high-kicks has been transformed for the stage by none other than Hamilton writer Lin-Manuel Miranda himself.

If Miranda can turn the technicalities of the US constitution into thrilling theatre, just think what he can do with the bitchtastic story of rival cheerleading squads competing at national championships. The fresh, talented team is completed by Tony-winning composers Jeff Whitty (AvenueQ) and Tom Kitt (Next to Normal) and lyricist Amanda Green (High Fidelity). This new musical finally comes to London's Southwark Playhouse after impressing Off-Broadway in 2012.

The sassy chants and high octane acrobatics give Bring It On all the ingredients for an invigorating, feel-good musical. But there's more to this millennial classic than bouncy routines and high school popularity contests. We follow newly-instated cheer captain Torrence Shipman (immortalised on film by Kirsten Dunst) through some serious soul-searching as she discovers that her squad has been winning awards and acclaim with routines stolen from a poor, predominately black inner city cheer team.

Hip hop meets cheese in a flurry of somersaults and a cloud of hairspary as the two very different cheerleading squads go head to head in the national championships.

Along with whip-smart comedy, coming of age trials and inevitable romance, this teen classic has a potent exploration of cultural appropriation and white privilege. We can't wait to see what magic Lin-Manuel Miranda brings.

One, two, three, altogether now:
Don't hate us cause we're beautiful cause we don't like you either!
We're cheerleaders! We are cheerleaders!
