Titus Andronicus, Sam Wanamaker Playhouse
Steel yourself: a new production of Shakespeare’s first and most gory tragedy Titus Andronicus is getting 2023 off to a stomach-lurching start in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse. It won’t be all blood-thirsty horror and no poignance, though, when exciting director Jude Christian (Dick Whittington) is at the helm.
The revenge tragedy follows the eye-for-an-eye fury between Roman general Titus Andronicus and Queen of the Goths Tamora. When Titus brings Tamora to Rome as his prisoner and refuses to show mercy to her eldest son, a cycle of killings begins, the bodies pile up and the two drive themselves and those around them to the edge of sanity.
With rape, a severed tongue, mutilated limbs and a human pie all featuring, Titus Andronicus is not one for the faint-hearted, but Christian's production is likely to be a thrilling ride.
