DollyWould, Soho Theatre

An Edinburgh Fringe hit inspired by an extreme love of Dolly Parton, and Dolly the sheep comes to Soho Theatre

Louise Mothersole and Rebecca Biscuit, who together make up the team behind Sh!t Theatre, are no strangers to Edinburgh Fringe. Working together since 2010, they have received numerous awards, including the Total Theatre Award in 2013 and a Fringe First award in 2016.

Their 2016 offering, Letter to Windsor House, made waves as both an excellent piece of theatre and a political statement about the Housing Crisis in London. Their latest offering is significantly less political but no less entertaining.

DollyWould was inspired by the pair’s love of Dolly Parton, and the show is loosely structured around the narrative of a pilgrimage the duo made to Dollywood, Parton’s theme park in Tennessee, last year. However, the key word here is ‘loosely’, as the show takes on a shambolic and rambling form, and the pair manage to riff on ideas spanning boobs, Dolly the cloned Sheep, fame, legacy and mortality.

The show is far sillier in theme than other previous works by Sh!t Theatre, but this hasn’t stopped Mothersole and Biscuit from gaining excellent reviews. Time Out described the duo as ‘talented and funny’, whilst What’s On Stage said the show is ‘very good fun’.
