Black Men Walking, Royal Court Theatre

The true story of three men hiking in the Peak District delves into black British history and identity in a new play at the Royal Court

Black Men Walking, Royal Court Theatre
‘We walked England before the English.’ Black Men Walking, based on a true story, brings an interpretation of the black British experience to the Royal Court's smaller Jerwood Theatre Upstairs stage.

Three men, Thomas, Matthew and Richard, walk and talk all over the Peaks on the first Saturday of every month. Out in the mountains, they forget the pressures of daily life, even as they recall and come into contact with ancient stories embedded in the land.

The encounter between these black British men and the landscape, which contains its own histories of British colonial, industrial and rural experience that are not necessarily hospitable to them, makes for a fraught premise.

The play is dedicated to a group of the same name, which undertakes similar expeditions. It's staged as part of Revolution Mix, a writing project that aims to enrich the canon of British theatre with untold British stories.
