Big Fish The Musical, The Other Palace Theatre
Kelsey Grammer stars in a musical theatre adaptation of book and Tim Burton film Big Fish
'There are some fish that cannot be caught. It's not that they are faster or stronger than the other fish, they're just touched by somethin' extra.'
A strange fable of a father and son in a fantastical world featuring witches, giants, a travelling circus and one enormous fish comes to the stage this Christmas. Big Fish, the 1998 novel by Daniel Wallace that was adapted into a hit film by Tim Burton in 2003, is transformed into a musical.
Tony-nominated composer Andrew Lippa (The Addams Family, The Wild Party) and lyricist John August (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) have written a new score and book to accompany the story. And the production will premiere at Andrew Lloyd-Webber's newly renamed Other Palace Theatre in Victoria – which specialises in incubating and launching new musicals.
Emmy, Tony and Golden Globe award-winning American actor Kelsey Grammer lends some star power as Edward Bloom, the extraordinary father who takes his altogether more ordinary son Will on a fantastical journey. Together father and son venture beyond the realms of normality and reality to discover the magic of imagination and the power of story-telling.
With plenty of wonder and lots of heart, Big Fish has the potential for feel-good musical theatre greatness. Certainly it's worth taking a chance on – it might just hook you.
