Legendary playwright Alan Bennett will make a rare London appearance to discuss his illustrious career in literature, theatre, television and film with National Theatre director Nicholas Hytner. The pair have a long and fruitful history of creative partnership: after Hytner directed Bennett’s smash hit play The Madness of King George in 1991 the pair worked together so well that when the film version was commissioned Bennett insisted that Hytner should direct again. The same thing happened with The History Boys : Bennett’s stunning show and its acclaimed film adaptation were both directed by Hytner.

Having won countless accolades including a whopping six Olivier awards and a BAFTA, Bennett is one of the most important figures contemporary theatre. He captures the bathetic tragedy of every day life with a distinctive voice. Hytner has been behind West End sensations such as The Book of Mormon and is responsible for revolutionising the National Theatre with reduced ticket prices to draw in a younger and more diverse audience.

The combination of both men’s dazzling successful careers, their relatively rare public appearances and a long-standing friendship will make for a fascinating conversation.
