Brazil is about to become a major player on the global scene, as host to the upcoming Word Cup and Olympic Games. Yet before these momentous sporting events kick off, the Index on Censorship invites the liberal-minded to consider the how far human rights and freedom of expression feature in the Brazil’s game plan.
Inspired by the poet Stephen Spender, the Index on Censorship has been championing unrestricted expression since 1972, fighting for free speech and challenging censorship. Working on a global scale, they have collaborated with some of the world’s most powerful figures, including Malala Yousafzai and Daniel Barenboim. Now, they have invited prominent players from the worlds of culture and politics to cast a focus on Brazilian rights. Amid the athletic hype, this event offers a unique chance to pause and consider the human rights that underpin sporting glory.
