On Structure: A.S. Byatt, Sergio De La Pava, Sarah Hall and Sam Leith, British Library

In the lead up to the first Folio Prize for Fiction announcement the society has joined forces with the British Library to celebrate the foundations of fabulous literature. The festival is organised around five central elements of fiction: Place, Voice, Genre, Structure and Context. From this scintillating schedule the standout event is On Structure.

Delving down to the skeleton of a story, esteemed authors A. S. Byatt, Sarah Hall, Sergio De La Pava and Sam Leith will discuss how these bare bones of plot and narrative form work to build literature. Byatt, internationally renowned for her labyrinthine structures and complex forms, will explore the importance of literary shape. Commonwealth Writers Prize winner Sarah Hall, along with former Telegraph literary editor and acclaimed author Sam Leith, will bring yet more experience and expertise to the discussion. There will also be contributions from the Columbian-American writer Sergio De La Pava, whose work has been described as "a thrilling rejoinder to the tidy story arcs portrayed on television".

For keen readers and aspiring writers this is a rare opportunity to see the authorial process stripped back to basics and to hear directly from some of the masters of contemporary fiction.
