5x15: Women's Equality Party, Central Hall Westminster
The Women's Equality Party and special guests come to Central Hall Westminster as part of the 5x15 2016 programme
Co-founded by writer Catherine Mayer and broadcaster
Sandi Toksvig, the Woman’s Equality Party is a relative newcomer on the British
political scene. In a system dominated by century-old parties, and in which female
MPs remain sorely under-represented, it is a welcome arrival. Since its first
meetings in early 2015, the party has rapidly become a sizeable presence with
some 45,000 members and supporters.
It has at its heart six core objectives: equal representation in politics, equal pay and opportunities, equal parenting and caregiving, equal treatment in and by the media, and an end to violence against women. The party expects to participate in the spring elections of 2016.
On 14 January, audiences are invited to join the founding members, and leader Sophie Walker for a special fundraiser at Central Hall Westminster as part of the 5x15 programme. Also on stage are some very notable guests. Author and columnist Caitlin Moran is one of the most significant, not to mention wittiest, voices in contemporary feminism; Tanya Moody is an actress whose impressive stage credits include performances with the RSC and the Royal Court; and Jo Brand, an icon of British comedy.
Together they will tackle serious issues with wit and intelligence in equal measure. For those interested in the progressive future of British politics, this is an event not be missed.
