Rio film season, Barbican Centre
To celebrate the 450th birthday of Rio de Janeiro, the Barbican and Rio Filme are organising a film festival to commemorate the rich landscape that is Brazilian cinema. Their recently unveiled programme, the Rio + season, will comprise 11 screenings and feature special introductions from filmmakers. The Rio + Film Festival promises a welcome mix of contemporary and classic gems from South America.
Getting things started at the opening gala is Fernando Coimbra’s Wolf at the Door, a dramatic thriller wherein a six-year-old’s kidnapping plunges her parents into turmoil.
City of God, plus a live musical performance of Limite
A highlight of the season will be a screening of Mario Peixoto's silent film Limite, with a live musical accompaniment, and the critically lauded City of God from director Fernando Meirelles. Many of the films will also feature screen talks and Q&As with notable producers and directors.

Other titles to be shown at the festival include love story Reaching for the Moon, and Joãozinho Trinta biopic the Samba Icon.
Another intriguing element of the festival is the London–Rio+ Production Forum business event – designed to forge ties between the London film industry and producers from Rio – which will take place on 24 September.
