Some Oxbridge dons sit in their book-lined, dusty studies, sipping port, frightening first years and nursing inter-departmental rivalries. Professor Mary Beard is not one of them. The Cambridge academic has left her ivory tower at Newnham College and stepped out into the world, becoming the best known classicist writing today. She has written many books, including The Parthenon, The Colisseum and the bests Pompeii: The Life of a Roman town. Her BBC2 documentary Meet The Romans drew in a captivated audience of 2 million, who praised her easy manner and clarity. Mary Beard is the woman who helped us fall in love with Romans all over again. She's also cool as a cucumber, weathering a storm of Twitter abuse with style and grace.
On October 28, she'll come to the Royal Geographical society to discuss her latest book, S.P.Q.R: A History of Ancient Rome, which is said to be her best book yet. She'll be discussing the work with award-winning historian Bethany Hughes, author of Helen of Troy: Goddess, Princess, Whore.
