As millionaires row becomes billionaires row, and the rich continue to get ever richer, middle and low income households are under strain. But are wealth taxes, such as the “mansion tax” or the 50p tax, really the answer?
The Spectator magazine: events
Right-wing magazine The Spectator asks whether it is economically counterproductive to squeeze the rich, considering easily they can pick themselves up, pack away all their taxable income and capital, and move to a more hospitable country. The top one per cent already pay more than a quarter of all taxes, so haven't they contributed more than their fair share? Isn't it time politicians left the wealthy alone?
The debate
The three speakers supporting the motion include Toby Young, journalist and cofounder of three free schools; Frazer Nelson, editor of The Spectator; William Cash, editor-in-chief of the wealth management and luxury lifestyle media brand, Spear’s.
They will be arguing with three left-wing minds set against the motion, including Owen Jones, Guardian columnist and author of The Establishment: And how the get away with it; Jack Monroe, author, columnist, campaigner and blogger at A Girl Called Jack and Molly Scott Cato, Green MEP for the South West.
