Joan Burstein, Browns, talk at the V&A
Joan Burstein, founder of Browns and celebrated fashion visionary will discuss her influential and impressive career at the V&A. The talk will cover Burstein's career in it's 60 year entirety, chronicling the stories of her major discoveries such as Alexander McQueen, John Galliano and Christopher Kane.Christened “the fairy godmother of fashion” by Vogue, she also introduced Jil Sander, Donna Karan, Giorgio Armani and Comme des Garçons to London.
Browns London
Browns has become an institution on South Molton Street, yet the fashion power house began her career running underwear shops on Oxford Street. Burstein consequently founded luxury boutique Feathers in the Fifties, before opening the most famous venture of all on South Molton street. Today Browns is also a champion of emerging designers, securing the shop's place as one of the most significant London platforms for fashion design.
Fashion and the V&A
The V&A has long served as a space for fashion to be discussed as art. The forthcoming exhibition Alexander McQueen:Savage Beauty is the perfect example, securing the museum as a centre akin to the The Met in New York in terms of how it supports contemporary culture. Aside from the entertaining stories and insight, this forthcoming talk by Mrs Joan Burstein, CBE will once again invite audiences to consider the place of fashion within contemporary art.
