Crick Crack Club: Darker Materials, Soho Theatre

The Crick Crack Club comes to The Soho Theatre once a month to perform readings from fairytales and myths to dark epics. Their season of storytelling continues on Monday 15th September with Darker Materials, performed by professional storyteller Mikael Oberg.

Oberg is a Swedish artist inspired by the traditional stories of Morocco, India andAfrica and specialises in the telling of Norse mythology and Finnish epic stories. Oberg often works with music and dance, performing with Theatre Slava, a community orientated musical and physical post-etno-punk theatre based near Stockholm.

The Darker Materials stories are from the Scandi-Noir genre, set in the mysterious blackness of the Scandinavian northern tundra where sunlight is scarce and dangerous creatures take advantage of the moon. This will be an epic adventure story with touches of ancient Norse legends and some darkly comedic materials. Think Game of Thrones White Walkers meeting a cranky Philip Pullman,with some Finnish epic poetry from The Kalevala thrown in.

This intimate performance will be staged in a new space at the Soho Theatre, Soho Upstairs. Made especially for fledgling productions and new writing, the studio is designed for fringe theatre looking for a London stage. Darker Materials is a one off performance, so book now, but there are monthly storytelling sessions from Crick Crack, including October’s offering, The Magician’s Apprentice. The event is suitable for ages 14 and above.
