Andy Miller's Read Yourself Fitter, Kings Place

After actually reading all those books he'd never got around to opening, Andy Miller shares his experience of 'reading dangerously' and urges you to do the same.

Whether it's War and Peace or Little Women, we all have a book or two that we've always intended to read, but never got around to. A book that we may have even said we've read in order to appear more cultured...

Editor and writer Andy Miller  realised this disparity in his own life, and decided to do something about it. This experience of actually reading the books that he’d bluffed about inspired The Year of Reading Dangerously: How Fifty Great Books (and Two Not-So-Great Ones) Saved My Life.

As part of a promotional tour for the book, Miller is doing a series of 'motivational lectures' entitled Read Yourself Fitter. Designed as a ten-step programme, Miller invites attendees fill out a slip that asks for the title and author of 'the one book I have always wanted to read', and then guides the audience through the rules of 'reading dangerously'. At the end of the talk, he then randomly chooses some of the books listed by audience.

"Reading dangerously is about connecting with great books in the real world, the one we actually live in, rather than the classroom or the pages of the London Review of Books," Miller writes on his blog . "It's about engaging with books and taking action. And crucially, it’s about telling the truth."

So, whether you need a call to arms to finally embark upon Ulysses, or just some motivation to finally admit that you prefer Harry Potter to Proust, come along and join the reading revolution.
