Writers' Talks on Endangered Animals, ZSL London Zoo

Six writers offer a personal reflection on an endangered animal, with additional contributions from London Zoo experts.

Writers' Talks on Endangered Animals, ZSL London Zoo
London Zoo invites us to consider its majestic inhabitants from both a creative and scientific point of view this summer with a new series of talks from leading writers. But unlike most literary talks, these unique events will take place in the presence of an endangered species.
Each of the six events focuses on a different creature – okabi, penguins, lions, apes, African hunting dogs and jungle habitat– and will be located at the relevant enclosure for a truly immersive experience. A different accomplished writer will reflect upon the animal’s symbolic significance and distinctive appeal. To compliment this creative approach, ZSL staff and expert conservationists will explain all about the animal and discuss how it can be protected from extinction. The audience are invited to contribute, with literary reflections or zoological queries.
This literary approach to conservation is the initiative of poet-cum-conservationist Ruth Padel, who will chair each talk. As an acclaimed writer of verse, non-fiction and most recently a novel and a ZSL Council Member, Padel's passion about promoting conservation through literary programmes makes for an innovative fusion of science and imagination.

Culture Whisper’s top picks include: intrepid explorer, travel writer and biographer Sara Wheeler depicting the affable manners of Emperor penguins (11th June); award-winning poet David Harsent giving a uniquely imaginative approach to the African hunting dog, (20 th August); and scholar, author and Darwin’s great-great-grandson Randal Keynes discussing the rich history his ancestor’s famed apes (1st Oct).
