The American author and essayist will be in London for a brief time to introduce her hotly-anticipated novel, The Blazing World. Hustvedt already has a poetry anthology, five novels, two collections of essays and a selection of non-fiction under her belt. And she does much more than weave a gripping tale: the thought-provoking exploration of identity and perception that forms the theme of much of her work led her to win Gabarron Internation Award for Though and Humanities in 2012
Gender is the focus of The Blazing World. Hustvedt’s heroine is an articulate artist called Harriet (Harry to friends). Her despair at inbuilt misogyny of the art world inspires her to construct three male alter-egos through which to present her paintings. Hustvedt’s prose is presented as part of Harriet’s research and comprises of a collection of ‘documents’ – interviews, letters, essays – all of which are drawn into a narrative through excerpts form the heroine’s diaries.
