Naomi Wood, Beyond Retro Book Club, Dalston

Delve into the history of literature, romance and fashion in this unique twist on the traditional book club format.

Acclaimed author Naomi Wood will discuss the captivating lives of the four wives of literary heavyweight Ernest Hemingway in the surroundings of Dalston’s retro fashion treasure trove. Mrs Hemingway , Wood’s fictionalised account of a fascinating history of hope and failed romance, voices the often-overlooked women who loved the Nobel Prize-winning writer. An innate longing for the stability of marriage, coupled with an inability to resist desire makes for a compelling story of betrayal, instability – but most of all, passion.

Once Wood’s insights have transported you into a bygone era of glamour and femininity, this rich history will be brought to life as Beyond Retro archivist and fashion expert Bea complements the novel by presenting specially selected garments corresponding the each historical period. Spanning the 1920s, ‘30s, ‘40s and ‘50s, these stunning vintage clothes will inspire an exploration of fashion’s influence across history and throughout Wood’s depiction of the four extraordinary Hemingway wives. Best of all, the event is completely free (but bring some cash in case you spot a vintage gem). Book now; spaces are limited.
