IAI Talk: The Self and the Selfie
The Institute of Art and Ideas is here to usurp TED talks as the leading platform for contemporary cultural dialogue. From February to April, the IAI will bring a trifecta of events to London.
Their initial event, Future of the Post-World Truth was a successful discussion exploring the ever-increasing subjectivity of truth in a world of contradictory perspectives. Complete with drinks, DJ sets, and leading thinkers engaged in radical debates, the Institute of Art and Ideas knows how to raise both awareness and the roof simultaneously.
Prepare yourself to uncover even more uncomfortable cultural truths on Tuesday 6 March. Their second event, The Self and Selfie, will see the Store at 180 the Strand transform into a platform for political debate. Tackling narcissism and creativity in Generation Selfie, the talk will analyse the impact of self-obsession on personal and sociological levels.
So far, confirmed speakers include Simon Blackburn, author of Mirror, Mirror: The Uses and Abuses of Self Love. Doll Cat Pvssy, a London-based Instagram influencer who founded the 'too sassy for Insta' project, where women could submit photos that were removed from Instagram, is set to speak. Powerhouse of talent Amy Grier, Associate Editor of Cosmopolitan magazine and driving force behind both Stylist and Women's Health, will offer her unique insights into the changing landscape of selfhood.
Art critic John Berger once postulated, 'You painted a naked woman because you enjoyed looking at her, put a mirror in her hand and you called the painting 'Vanity', thus morally condemning the woman whose nakedness you had depicted for you own pleasure.'
