The Girls, a reimagining of the real lives of Charles Manson’s followers, has been bought by Random House for a rumoured £1.4m and Scott Rudin, producer of No Country for Old Men and The Truman Show, has already bought the film rights.

Told from the point of view of one of the cult members, the novel grew out of her sense of affinity with the girls who Manson lured away from their families into a murderous cult.

Lena Dunham says that The Girls "destroys our ability to consider violence a foreign territory, and reminds us that behind so many of our culture's fables exists a girl: unseen, unheard, angry. This book will break your heart and blow your mind."
