Wine and high fashion conversation with designer Bella Freud

The V&A has pinned down fashion Bella Freud for a one-off conversation and it promises to be as interesting and varied as the designer's statement knits.

Freud is particularly famous for her slogan sweaters.‘Ginsberg is God’, ‘Psychoanalysis’ or the more accessible ‘1970’ emblazoned on a jumper make the wearer a literal fashion statement. She started out her career working alongside rock star of fashion, Dame Vivienne Westwood and she’s also behind the revival of the Biba brand, which has gone from a dead 60s icon to a big House of Fraser concession.

Freud currently sells her clothes internationally but her own Marylebone store is an intimate space that nods to her artistic background: it’s set up in a former art gallery. She also sells perfumes and that ubiquitous affordable luxury item, the scented candle.

From one of the most artistic families in the world, Bella is one of the artist Lucien Freud’s famous offspring and has sat for his portraits. Her hippie childhood in Morocco is well documented by her sister Esther Freud’s memoirs.

Now, for a one-off lecture at the V&A's Lydia and Manfred Gorvy theatre, the notoriously private designer will open up about her creative process and inspirations. The evening includes a wine reception, which should make this conversation with Freud slip down a treat.

Lou Stoppard from the fashion website SHOWstudio will be asking the questions. Stoppard has interviewed celebrities from Kanye West to Sir Paul Smith and should make the conversation flow.

With such a long, varied career in the fashion industry, Bella Freud’s one-off talk this Friday would be a stylish addition to your evening plans. But book fast: tickets are likely to sell out with the same speed as Freud's limited edition designs.
