Opera buffs: prick up your ears. The first show of the year from the prestigious Guildhall School of Music - one of our favourite nights in the opera calendar - is almost upon us. This year’s double bill of Debussy and Donizetti provides a rare opportunity to glimpse the talent poised to take on the big stage, in the wonderfully intimate surrounds of the Barbican’s Silk Street Theatre.
Current students of the Guildhall School’s Opera Course will be performing two of the early modern period’s lesser-known pieces, under superstar conductor, and Guildhall Head of Opera, Dominic Wheeler. Debussy’s emotive 1884 L’enfant prodigue, a Biblical cantata in one act, has been expertly paired with Donizetti’s neglected 1831 comedy Francesca di Foix, which follows the travails of an overprotective husband trying to shield his wife’s beauty from prying eyes. It’s a coup on the part of director Stephen Barlow who is currently in his second year as Artistic Director of the Buxton Festival, and we’re expecting superlative things.
Guildhall productions have been known to sell out two or three weeks before performance day, so don’t wait around!
