Silent Opera's Giovanni, The Vaults

An immersive, experimental production of Mozart's Don Giovanni, perfect for those new to opera

Silent Opera's Giovanni, The Vaults
Silent Opera’s Giovanni comes to us as part of the recent craze for immersive interpretations of theatre and performance works, turning the audience into part of the story. The company are no strangers to experimentation, previously employing individual headphones to make their productions of Dido and Aeneas and La Boheme as intimate as possible.
This time, they have gone a step further, developing a dedicated mobile app for the performance. Through the app one will interact with the devilish Giovanni by rating his actions, affecting the course of the play. Will Giovanni be damned or saved? You decide. The production will meld music with spoken word, projection and sound manipulation.
Silent Opera’s creative lynchpin Daisy Evans directs two rising stars. Benedict Nelson, a regular at the ENO, plays Giovanni, joined by Frederick Long as Leporello. This promises to be a fresh interpretation and democratic of Mozart’s undying piece, perhaps to the point of transformation entirely. Whether it shocks or pleases you, however, will depend on just how traditional you like your opera. Its use of contemporary technology might well be the perfect introduction to the genre.
