The renowned French director Laurent Pelly’s effervescent 2007 production of Donizetti’s comic masterpiece, La Fille du Régiment, is the blockbuster event in the coming season at Covent Garden. It's an instant classic with a cast list that transcends the most super of superlatives. The mere thought of Peruvian opera superstar Juan Diégo Florez effortlessly hurdling the top Cs of ‘Pour mon âme’ has us jibbering with glee, but if that isn’t enough for you, an appearance from the acclaimed international soprano Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, reprising her role as The Duchess of Krakenthorp, should do the trick.
Florez' string of high Cs in La Fille du Régiment have become a regular showstopper. When he sang them at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan in 1993 he became the first person to violate the encore ban since 1933. In 2008, he did another solo encore at the Met in New York. Whilst British audiences tend to be more restrained, so an encore is unlikely in London, you never know.
