La Traviata - Royal Opera House
Former National Theatre director Richard Eyre’s interpretation of Verdi’s La Traviata has stood the test of time. Now entering its twentieth year, it needs no introduction. We are particularly excited about the four performances (6,12, 17 and 20 May) in which the American husband and wife duo, Ailyn Pérez and Stephen Costello, take on the roles of Violetta and Alfredo respectively. Critics have sometimes been disappointed by the lack of emotion between Violetta/Alfredo pairings in Eyre's production, but the onstage chemistry between Pérez and Costello is a joy to behold. The American duo have both won the Richard Tucker Award, the most prestigious of American opera awards, and represent a new generation of opera.

La Traviata is one of Verdi's most popular operas and Violetta one of his most complex characters. It tells the story of Violetta's decadent life in Paris followed by her move to the country with Alfredo, a love story which ends tragically. If you enjoy orchestral swells, opulent garments, and lung-busting arias that coax handkerchiefs out of pockets and tissues out of handbags, this will be a satisfying experience.
