Cendrillon, Royal Academy of Music

The end of November is perhaps a bit early to get into the Christmas spirit, but French comic opera is undeniably better than any pantomime. Massenet’s Cendrillon is not quite as funny as Rossini’s version, but will still be an enjoyable evening of opéra-comique at its finest.

If you are looking for a light-hearted opera that isn’t too serious and some fresh talent, this is the place to come and find it. The Royal Academy of Music has become the successful British singer’s branding and most of the significant names in opera will have this tag attached to their biography somewhere along the line. It’s great to get in and see the young singers, as you never know who you might see at the start of their career. 

Cendrillon is one of the few works that Massenet composed that is actually a little more fun. He wrote other comic operas, which you may know, like Manon - on this season at the Royal Opera House. We all know the traditional Cinderella story, but librettist Henri Cain gave Massenet’s opera a little twist on the fairy tale. Much to its success, the opera has been going since it first premiered in 1899. There are catchy tunes throughout the four acts and you are almost guaranteed to be humming them on the way home.
