Art, politics and love collide in Puccini's masterpiece, in which the menacing chief of police, Scarpia, pursues the opera singer of the title
Tosca opens Grange Park Opera's first season in its new home at West Horsley Place
It is hard to imagine a more atmospheric opening to Grange Park Opera's new life near the capital than the bustling, swirling life of Rome in Puccini's Tosca.
The painter Cavaradossi is perfecting his new picture of the Madonna in the church of Sant' Andrea della Valle when his possessive lover, the glamorous singer Floria Tosca, drops in and accuses him of using another woman as his model. And there's a man on the run, who needs a refuge.
Rome in June 1800 is a dangerous time and place: the city is unstable as Napolean drives through Europe, and spies and enemies are everywhere. Against this perilous background, the artists try to stay true to their calling and their beliefs while their place in the public eye puts them at risk. And most dangerous of all is the chief of police Scarpia, who, unluckily for the singer, desires Tosca.
In this promising new production, the superstar Maltese tenor Joseph Calleja, recent star of the Royal Opera House's Norma, plays Cavaradossi with the Russian-Italian soprano Ekaterina Metlova as Tosca, and English National Opera, Opera Holland Park and English Touring Opera regular, baritone Roland Wood, as the devilish Scarpia.
Gianluca Marciano conducts, and Tosca is directed by Peter Relton, with designs by Francis O'Connor, whose flair for Italian settings is also seen this summer at Garsington Opera, in its revival of Il Turco in Italia.
Tosca is sung in Italian.
