One of the most joyous productions of recent years at Glyndebourne Festival Opera came from a surprising place. The love affair between Julius Caesar and Cleopatra sounds remote, but set to music and staged by David McVicar, the romance becomes genuinely mischievous, sexy and fun.

Starring soprano Danielle de Niese as a Bollywood-style starry Cleopatra and mezzo-soprano Sarah Connolly as her suitor Cesare, Glyndebourne's scintillating Giulio Cesare is one of the must-see productions of our time, originally staged in 2005.

Forget everything you might have thought about opera, if you are a total newcomer, and just enjoy this tongue-in-cheek drama. Or if you are already a fan of London-adopted composer Handel, enjoy the many great numbers being given a bright new polish.

De Niese proves a natural song-and-dance star, and Connolly is totally convincing in the 'trouser' role of Cesare.

William Christie conducts the on-stage Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, and the dazzling design is a team effort by set designer
Robert Jones, costume designer Brigitte Reiffenstuel, and lighting designer Paul Constable.

A big treat from start to finish, this is a jewel in the crown of Glyndebourne, and a production to discover or re-live.
