Another exciting breakthrough for live music-making comes with news of an open-air Tosca in the Bowl at Crystal Palace.
Star soprano Natalya Romaniw takes the title role in Puccini's powerful and action-packed tragedy. London's music scene has been hoping and waiting to hear this phenomenal singer in a role that she has already taken in her native Wales.
This story never goes out of fashion, and is chilling in its depiction of sexual abuse. Floria Tosca is an opera singer who has attracted the unwanted attentions of the chief of police in a terrorised Rome. He uses his power to lure her to his rooms, but with a surge of strength Tosca takes the upper hand.
Her lover, the painter and political activist Cavaradossi is dragged into this corrupt episode, and is tricked into paying a high price for love.
Audiences are invited to bring rugs and cushions for this non-seated occasion, which has all the makings of a thrilling night out. Tenor David Junghoom Kim sings Cavaradossi, with baritone Roland Wood as the evil Scarpia.
As music comes back to life, English National Opera has already announced its autumn Valkyrie. And don't miss its Messiah on BBC Two on Easter Day.
