ECO @ 60: live concert, Cadogan Hall
Mozart, JS Bach and Vaughan Williams join the party when the English Chamber Orchestra marks its 60th season with a celebratory programme of favourite works

A live concert to an audience at Cadogan Hall, off Sloane Square, marks the start of the English Chamber Orchestra’s 60th birthday celebrations on Wed 7 Oct at 8PM), when the programme includes many much-loved pieces associated with that ensemble.
Leader Stephanie Gonley is the soloist Vaughan Williams’s luminous The Lark Ascending. Operatic and concert arias from soprano Lauren Lodge-Campbell and mezzo-soprano Horak-Hallett include Mozart’s ecstatic Exsultate, jubilate and Dido’s Lament from Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas.
The greatest mezzo-soprano of another era, Dame Janet Baker, introduces the evening. A friend and collaborator of the orchestra’s founder Raymond Leppard, at 87 she can survey the ECO’s whole history. Leppard, who died last year, began conducting the orchestra in the 1960s and made than 200 records. The ECO is the world’s most recorded chamber orchestra, notching up 860 recordings of over 1,500 works by more than 400 composers.
Also on the programme on 7 Oct is music by Rameau, Monteverdi and JS Bach, illustrating the orchestra’s prowess in the Baroque repertoire and its revival in the concert hall under Leppard. Film buffs will know the music he composed for Peter Brook’s 1963 film adaptation of Lord of the Flies.
Irish/British conductor James Sherlock, who conducts the Cadogan Hall concert, says: ‘Raymond Leppard’s legacy to the musical world is an indelible one. A “complete musician”, this concert pays tribute to Ray in a broad spectrum of repertoire that he loved, in particular through his love of the human voice.’
The 60th season, although restricted by the current pandemic, will include Handel’s Messiah at Cadogan Hall (6 Dec) with the captivating vocal ensemble Voces8, a concert with virtuoso violinist Pinchas Zuckerman at the Royal Festival Hall (date to be announced) and a European and American tour.
The audience at the Cadogan Hall will be safely spaced, in line with current restrictions. And if you can't get there, enjoy the ECO online, via its Facebook page and streamed performances.
