Ride the Mail Rail at the Postal Museum

Here's a top recommendation for an immersive experience your kids will enjoy over the summer hols: book them in for a coveted spot on the Mail Rail, where they can ride through London's secret, subterranean tunnels, which are over 100 years old.

The 15-minute Mail Rail ride lets kids board a miniature train and ride through the labyrinthine tunnels 70 feet underground to see the largely unchanged original station platforms below Royal Mail's Mount Pleasant sorting office, as well as taking in an audiovisual exhibition that details the history of the Mail Rail, with audio clips from those who worked on it all those years ago. It is a hugely popular experience, so be sure to book in advance. Kids 12+ and their parents can also sign up for a Mail Rail tunnel walking tour.




The Postal Museum has another big draw for families with children: a soft play area called Sorted!, designed for kids 8 and under, which replicates a Post Office with trolleys, slides, post boxes and more.

A must for taking your kids back in time - and one which will hopefully inspire them to start writing (actual writing, not email!) some letters in the future. The Postal Museum also hosts weekend workshops, crafts sessions and storytelling for kids.
