Find festive cheer with a touch of elegance: ice skating at Somerset House returns this winter with rink-side DJ takeovers, winter dining and festive surprises

Outdoor ice skating is a beloved pre-Christmas London tradition in London, enjoyed by all ages and abilities. The ice-skating rink at Somerset House returns this winter following a pandemic-enforced hiatus in 2020 – and you'll want to book fast to ensure you can snag a weekend or prime evening slot close to Christmas (they fill up very fast).
Skate at Somerset House runs from mid-November until mid-January and the season is littered with several special events, offering plenty of opportunities to show off your leaps, twirls and styled-out falls on the ice. New health and safety measures mean the 2021 rink features more open skate space plus an extended area for hiring and returning skates.
The ice rink, with its backdrop of elegant Georgian architecture, has become a beloved staple of London's winter season. Here, you can glide in front of a 40ft Christmas tree laden with decorations from Moët & Chandon, the official partners of the season. The champagne specialist is also behind a skate lounge serving sparkling wines and cocktails for those looking to raise a glass on site.

Festive pop-up connoisseur Jimmy Garcia launches a new dining experience for Skate this year: Chalet Barragiste. Inspired by the chef’s stint in the Alps, the menu features warming winter specials including game burgers, fondue (plus a vegan equivalent) and original seasonal cocktails (buttered rum, anyone?) Desserts take on an American twist, with build-your-own s’more sets a highlight of the menu.
Further sweet treats come by way of Hotel Chocolat, which is serving up indulgent twists on classic hot chocolate and festive goodies to take home from its Chocmobile and pop-up store. For those who want to make their own, the store is also hosting a series of chocolate workshops for children and adults alike.
Skate Lates are also making a welcome return, with rink-side deck takeovers hosted by an exciting roster of DJs including members of female-led Foundation FM, BBC Radio 1’s Jaguar and Glasgow-based community radio station Clyde Built Radio.

Infusing the skating season with a series of sporadic surprises is Somerset House’s Beano exhibition: The Art of Breaking the Rules. So keep your eyes peeled for spots of mischief.
Don’t despair if you’re the Bambi of your family or friendship group – instruction is available for new skaters of all ages, so anyone can brush up on their (potentially non-existent) skills. All teachers are accredited by the National Ice Skating Association and under their instruction, you’ll build confidence on the ice in no time.
The spacious rink, comforting treats, breathtaking decor and cosy hangouts all make Skate at Somerset House a glorious way to spend an afternoon or evening – with family, friends or flying solo.
