Refugee Week 2017
Syrian storytelling and drop-in designs: free family events across the city of London for Refugee Week
Founded in 1998 as a response to emerging hostility towards refugees from the media and society in general, Refugee Week is now one of the leading initiatives working to change the discussion and counter the climate of negativity that surrounds refugees.
The international festival takes place every year around World Refugee Day on 20 June. In the UK, Refugee Week is a nationwide program that celebrates the artistic and cultural contributions of refugees in the UK. There will be a series of educational programs dedicated to bridging gaps between communities, raising awareness of the realities of the refugee experience, and overcoming hostility.
There will be a wide variety of family-friendly events occurring across the city dedicated to showcasing the talent and expertise refugees bring to the UK, enriching our society. Read on for our pick of the best kids events.

Refugee Week, Southbank Centre
19 June - 2 July
Various times
Cost: Varies
Two events take place at the Southbank Centre for Refugee Week. The first event, Hear Her Singing is presented by filmmaker Tsering Tashi Gyalthang with Taiwanese artist Charwei Tsai. The project uses music to give women refugees in the UK a platform. The second event is Gift Giving, hosted by artists Afshin Dehkordi and Saeed Taji Farouky. Gift Giving is a freestanding print making session where young refugees pass on their newly acquired printmaking skills to a member of the public. Prints will be pinned to a structure as they come off the press so the installation evolves throughout the week, or you can take a free print home.
