Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Hoxton Hall Review: Culture Whisper says ★★★★★
"High ho, high ho, it's off to work we go," so sing the seven dwarfs, (seven weirdly masked children), on their way around Hoxton Hall. This is the only song fans of the original 1937 cartoon will recognise as the rest of this East End pantomime, which uses pop songs to replace the traditional score, in this modern twist on a fairy tale classic.
This is Hoxton Hall's very first panto and it's easily mastered the essentials of any good Christmas show: hilarious Dame dressed in glittering, fabulous (and regularly changed) costumes, a likeable, beautiful heroine (Snow White), a spectacularly gruesome and wicked villain (evil Queen), a bumbling fool (Muddles) who keeps asking the audience to shout out 'he's behind you' or 'hello Muddles' and a handsome Prince who can sing as well as any member of Take That.
The script stays pretty true to the original story of Snow White we know and love: a young, beautiful woman who the evil Queen orders to be murdered when the magic mirror on the wall tells her that Snow White, and not she, is the fairest of them all. Curiously, the script also stays true to some of the original misogyny of the 37 original, and the dwarfs fall in love with Snow White and agree to house her only on the grounds that she's good at cooking and cleaning, and keep her safe until she's saved by a Prince.
If you take for granted that these fairy tales are going to come with a large dollop of sexism, the pantomime is a lovely slap-dash tale where everyone gets their just desserts and happy endings reign supreme to be enjoyed by all.
The set is a masterpiece, but unfortunately none of the actors are wearing microphones, which, particularly in the case of Snow White, makes hearing the singing and some of the words something of a challenge, especially in an audience of chattering children.
A lovely, boisterous pantomime for families looking for an intimate venue and earnest singers.
