The King of Tiny Things: Culture Whisper says ★★★★★
As a parent, it can be difficult to find a theatrical performance that captures the imagination of your children but also manages to entertain the grown-ups.
The King of Tiny Things isn't perfect. The story, based on the book by Jeanne Willis and Gwen Milward, is at times disconnected and confusing, the singing could be better and the jugglers literally dropped their balls on a few occasions. But it's still a beautiful visual spectacle with acrobatics, dancing and colourful costumes. Because the actors dance around the stage, juggling, diving dramatically onto a pond-come-mattress and cartwheeling everywhere they go, children sit quietly mesmerised throughout, whilst parents can enjoy the visuals.
The story follows two sisters spending the night in a tent in their grandfather's garden, meeting slugs and caterpillars in the throes of pupation, bats and a five legged daddy longleg in need of help. The performers change between their human and insect roles, taking turns to control the King of Tiny Things puppet and doing good wherever they go as the insects and children grown up and change.
It's a lovely hour of creepy-crawly related theatre that is likely to be all the better for those families who have enjoyed the original book.
