The Polka Theatre in Wimbledon has long been a sanctuary for young South London parents. An airy, orderly space with wooden toys and children's books enclosed by dream-like multicoloured sculptures and soft benches welcomes families in need of a moment to decompress.
Behind the play space is a little theatre, which this autumn is hosting Beasty Baby, a wintery tale exploring the magic of growing up set in a beautiful winter wonderland.
Three young adults imagine into existence a little (monstery) baby, who needs feeding, changing and entertaining as it grows, quite suddenly, and begins to become more and more demanding and a little bit beastly.
The three actors beautifully handle the puppet monster, giving it life and character without ever loosing their own, even as beasty is sick down their backs, throws food around the room and refuses to go to bed.
Beautiful nordic wooden furniture transforms into props and musical instruments as the trio sing lullabies to get beasty baby to sleep and go tobogganing in the snow that really falls down on them from the ceiling.
Beasty Baby is party play, part dance and part live music performance from Theatre-Rites, whose theatrical performances include shows at the Southbank Theatre, Curve, and all around the UK.
Children are totally engrossed and given enough space to lie on the floor or perch on soft seats throughout to ensure that they never got frustrated or bored. A beautiful wintery tale, perfect for London's little ones -- although parents should be warned that, as it's designed for very little ones, it can feel like quite a slow hour.
