Roald Dahl's The Giraffe And The Pelly And Me, Little Angel Theatre
A charming musical puppet show for families based on the classic book by Roald Dahl
The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me, Little Angel Theatre review: Culture Whisper says ★★★★★
Little Angel Theatre in Islington is a remarkable theatre for children, with spectacular set designs, etherial puppetry and original music. This year's winter performance of The Giraffe, The Pelly and Me, based on the much loved book by children's author Roald Dahl, has all the ingredients for a magical Christmas performance.
The catchy musical numbers breath new life into the story of Billy, a little boy who goes on many jolly adventures with his newfound friends, a monkey and a pelican. Billy, who as always dreamed of owning a sweet shop and one day discovers the head office for the Leaderless Window-Cleaning Company, run by a giraffe with an extendable neck, a pelican with an enormous expanding beak and a dancing monkey and set up business together cleaning windows and catching the odd robber.
Unfortunately a watered down script is little too earnest to keep kids gripped to the edge of their seats. Whereas in the books the word 'idiot' is freely banded about and the Duke threatens to shoot Billy when he finds the young boy picking his cherries, on stage the elderly millionaire asks Billy about his economic plans for the Ladderless Window-Cleaning Compan, which is meant to be a joke but falls somewhat flat.
This musical show is visually spectacular: the giraffe's neck really extends, the pelly opens his beak to reveal a mouthful of cherries the house of angular oddly shaped windows and doors is pulled apart by the actors like a dance and rebuilt into different sets. For that alone it's worth travelling to Islington for this performance, courtesy of the creative team behind Little Angel favourites including ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’ and ‘The Mouse Queen’. But for something that will have children roaring with laughter, we recommend I Want My Hat Back at the National Theatre.
Suitable for age 4 - 11.
Children can be admitted from age 3: babies and children under 3 are only admitted at All Ages performances.
