Impossible review, Noël Coward Theatre: Culture Whisper says ★★★★★
Brand new magic show Impossible at The Noël Coward Theatre certainly has gasp-worthy moments of befuddlement as the audience witnesses countless disappearing acts and mind-reading tricks. But there’s also a somewhat outdated display of machismo and male power over attractive female magicians’ assistants.
About Impossible, London magic show
This utter extravaganza of magical talent is undoubtedly an entertaining night for many a London crowd. With particularly dumbfounding grand illusions from Ali Cook and Luis de Matos, it is safe to say that there’s not a dull moment in Impossible, and the wide range of tricks and skills displayed should bring something for even the staunchest of sceptics. The show is slick and smooth in execution and often visually stunning, particularly during the high-tech illusions of digital master, Jamie Allan.
West End magic show sends a problematic message
But while the magical feats make this show a fantastic family treat for the summer, the messages it sends about the roles of women are frustratingly out-of-date.
Most of the assistants are female, teetering in high-heels, and glamorous without fail – while folded into small boxes, cut in half and made to disappear many times over. When Katy Goodwin, assistant and wife of danger-man and escapologist Jonathan Goodwin, holds a balloon in her mouth and her husband aims his croswbow, it is he that gets the title ‘daredevil’.
It is especially sad, given these issues, that the show’s only female magician (of eight), Katherine Mills, seem to have mysteriously withdrawn. She would have been a more than welcome presence in the midst of all this macho magic.
