Of all the children's activities in London this summer, the Horrible Histories at the Garrick Theatre has one of the best track records, selling out to young audiences. That is why, following the success of Barmy One and Two, this fun-loving, and gratifyingly revolting children's show is back for Part Three: Horrible Histories, Barmy Britain, Part 3!
Written and directed by Horrible Histories actor Neal Foster (in collaboration with the Horrible Histories children's author Terry Deary) this brand new show delivers all the toe-curling nonsense, rude recruits and cheeky chaps from across Britain's history in quick succession with - at times - ever so slightly laboured segues as thousands of years are brushed aside.
Actors Neal Foster and Anthony Spargo, both of whom brought gallons of glorious gore to the London stage in the show's previous incarnations, resurrect a musical King Charles, Admiral Nelson and the Duke of Wellington, make desperate escapes from the frightful First World War and chug down litres of cholera infected water from the John Snow pump during the vile Victorian period. (It's of course proved that far from knowing nothing, John Snow was a solitary voice of reason.)
Revolting Stone Age men chew on the dead sheep from the stomach of a brown bear (this is the first scene - a baptism by blood approach to let young audiences know exactly what they're in for) and, one of Culture Whisper's favourite moments, magna carta's King John signs in Runnymede, keeping the audience giggling with his silly antics and very silly costume.
Filled with exciting songs, grizzly sound effects and much silliness, this marvellous children's show on the West End encourages a love of history and will get children learning about Britain's magnificent past (and present - an 'I Hate UKip' sign especially springs to mind) even if all they're aware of is how much fun they're having.
Expect audience participation, and to leave the theatre singing about the difference between Viking, Roman and Saxon towns.
